Cindy Paola Sierra embodies the strength of her Wayuu Indigenous heritage, yet her early life was marked by hardship. Growing up in northern Colombia, her family often struggled to find enough food, and access to education and healthcare was limited. From an early age, she experienced discrimination and exclusion, which made her feel invisible.
As a young woman and mother, she faced even greater challenges. She endured domestic violence and relied on informal jobs to survive. She often sold food or small goods on the streets with borrowed tools, never knowing if she would earn enough to feed her children.
Yet, hidden within her story of struggle was a legacy of resilience. From an early age, she learned the art of handcrafts from her father, who passed down the indigenous tradition of weaving with caña flecha—a beautiful and symbolic cultural craft. Even in her darkest days, this heritage gave her strength and a sense of identity.
In 2022, Cindy was selected to join Pathway of Opportunities (Camino de Oportunidades), Opportunity International Colombia’s graduation program. This holistic approach is designed to help families transition from extreme poverty to sustainable livelihoods.
For 18 months, Cindy received:
Step by step, she transformed her father’s teachings into a business idea. In August 2024, Cindy proudly graduated from the program. Her bracelets, once a hidden talent, became the foundation of a dignified livelihood.
Cindy explains:
“Thanks to initiatives like Pathway of Opportunities, many of us have learned to change the way we think, face difficulties with greater strength, and discover valuable tools, such as faith, hope, and knowledge. These initiatives have planted in each participant the conviction that it is possible to move forward.”
Today, she is part of the Post-Graduation Project, where she continues to strengthen her skills with advanced technical training and business mentorship.
During her training, Cindy reconnected with her roots and her creativity. She started making bracelets by hand, drawing inspiration from indigenous patterns and colors. What started as a small craft became a symbol of her resilience and dignity.
Each bracelet represents a part of Cindy’s journey: the pain she overcame, the hope she found, and the future she is creating for her children.
“Thanks to the support I received, I have become a woman of greater faith—resilient and persevering—with a renewed desire to overcome challenges. Today, I am motivated to continue learning, grow as an entrepreneur, and fulfill my dreams,” Cindy said.
When you wear Cindy’s handmade bracelet, you’re carrying more than just jewelry—you’re carrying her story of transformation. It represents a woman’s courage to break free from poverty and violence.
